Headlines and Results - 2007 Fall Matches & Tournaments

11/11 - On a beauty Veteran's Day afternoon to close the season, the Spirit overcome an early opposition goal in the first minute of play by dominating the pitch for the remainder of the match and scoring two unanswered second half goals.  Battling back from behind, their trademark quality of late, our girls earned their second consecutive year with an undefeated season and with that type of quality play, a move up to the Washington Area Girls Soccer League for Spring 2008!  Only a razor thin difference with the McLean Liberty in season goal differential kept the Spirit out of first place in the division (see final standings below).  Great season girls!!!

11/4 - In the classic late season battle for first place, the Spirit travel to Great Falls to challenge the McLean Liberty, with the winner getting first place in the division.  Well known to the Spirit from three previous meetings this year, the Liberty's strong defense (zero goals allowed this season) matched the Spirit's defense, continuing to hold fast in spite of a strong Spirit second half attack.  The resulting scoreless draw leaves both teams undefeated and with the same record (5-0-2), but with the tiebreaking edge going to the Liberty as both teams head into the last match of the season next week!

10/28 - Gaining a "home field advantage" given to them by hostile weather that forced a change in venue, the Spirit get an opportunity to play their first regular season match on the well-drained artifical turf of Carl Sandburg in Mount Vernon.  Their experience with the experimental surface allowed for some beautifully constructed plays, with the girls scoring on two of them, while denying the opposing Great Falls Extreme any good looks on goal, easily dominating the match, 2-0.  The Spirit now have scored more goals than any other teams in Division 1 and carry the same record as the division-leading McLean Liberty (5-0-1) into the big match against the Liberty next week to decide first place!

10/21 - Hosting the Chantilly Firecats on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Mount Vernon, the Spirit play a groggy first half, with porous defense giving up two early goals and lackluster offense unable to capitalize on opportunities, trailing at the half, 3-1.  However, after a strong Knute Rockne speech by Coach Zatt before the second half, our girls answered the call to action, pounding home three well designed, unanswered goals to win this match, 4-3, maintaining a lock on 2nd place in the division.

10/7 - Beach FC Tournament - For the third time this fall, the Spirit dominates the pool play of their tournament bracket, outscoring their opponents 10-0 in the first two matches, taking the girls to the semi-final of this popular tournament.  Historically plagued by questionable conditions, this year's tournament was held in wonderful temps and weather and a good time was had by all in our annual fall sojourn to Virginia Beach, but unable to capitalize on several opportunities during the match, the Spirit yield to the eventual championship team (their cross-town and ODSL division rival), the McLean Liberty, 1-0.

9/30 - The Spirit traveled to Gainesville to take on the VSA Heat, dominating play and producing many opportunities throughout the match, while limiting the opponents time of possession and only allowing three shots on goal. With time winding down in the second half however, the Spirit took advantage of a quick outlet pass to one of our forwards, providing that moment of Spirit magic - taking the ball in her own half, she attacked the two defenders with successive cutbacks, while speeding toward the penalty area. Beating the defenders, she brought the ball under control and whipped a shot to the far post past the keeper, providing the only goal of the match and the 1-0 victory, propelling the team to 2nd place in the division.

9/23 - Maintaining their winning ways, the Spirit triumph at home over the new NVSC Cougars 2-1.

9/16 - Solid play by our girls and a stalwart defense gets our squad on the winning path, taking this one 2-0 against the Loudoun 93 White on their home pitch.

9/9 - The Spirit host the ASC Freedom, dominating the pitch the majority of the match and scoring twice, but a Cinderella shot by the opposition with a few minutes left in the match finds its way into the net, leaving the Spirit with a unsatisfying 2-2 draw in their first ODSL Div 1 match this fall.

9/2 - PWS Toys for Tots Tournament - Once again, the our girls work hard on a beautiful weekend for soccer to climb to the finals, but a strong Vista Fury team takes the Championship, handing the Spirit their only two losses of the tournament.  We finish as runners-up for the second tourney in a row this fall, extending the streak of reaching the championship game in tournaments to four in 2007, as the girls prepare to enter the fall ODSL season this coming Sunday.

8/19 -  SYA Cardinal Cup Tournament  - The Spirit weather the summer heat to go to their third straight tournament championship match this year, but get edged out in the final standings by a late game comeback by the MYS Breakers.  The draw in the Championship match leaves the Spirit finishing out of first place for the first time in their 2007 tourney schedule.
