2007 Spring Match and Tournaments Results & Headlines

6/9/07 & 6/10/07 - In the first part of a weekend doubleheader, the Spirit hit the road to battle the Great Falls Extreme in a duel for second place in the division, but an injury ridden roster continues to make it tough for our girls to be at their team best.  In a tough fought match in the summer heat, the Spirit yield the match and second place in the division to the Extreme, 3-1.  The following day, still weary from the prior day's match and no better off with the 'disabled list', the Spirit let a victory sneak away in the final minutes against the Winchester United, drawing the match, 2-2.   With the loss/draw weekend, the Spirit finish  in a respectable fourth place in their initial season back in Division 1.

5/26/07 & 5/27/07 - The Spirit participate once again The Virginian, one of the premier tournaments of Northern Virginia, drawing teams from as far away as New York and Canada.  Saturday and Sunday pool play see the Spirit dominate their bracket, moving through their first three opponents by an aggregate score of 8-0.  The semi-final featured a tough match against a Pennsylvania team where the Spirit defense and goalkeeping preserved a 1-0 victory after an extended rain delay, extending the tournament clean sheet to over 4 consecutive hours of shutout soccer to advance to the Championship match.  Though injuries reared their head again in the Championship, with two key players on the DL, and the opposition scoring first, the Spirit offense relentlessly keep knocking on the door, finally putting in an equalizing goal in stoppage time in the second half, ending regulation in a 1-1 draw.  Two 10 minute OT's don't crown a victor, so it took a repeat of the March Icebreaker with our girls winning in PK's, 3-1, with decidedly better shotmaking to take home the Championship cup!  Check out the Championship game photos, pregame "international procession" and video clips of the tiebreaker PK's at the team Photo Album!

5/20/07 - The Spirit travel to McLean to take on the Liberty, their rival in the championship match from the PWSI Icebreaker.  Again, in the same fashion as that March tourney final (which, as you will recall, we won!), both teams played each other goal for goal throughout this match.  But with no tiebreaker for this regular season match, the resulting 2-2 draw keeps the Spirit firmly positioned in third place in the division as we look to the annual Virginian tournament Memorial Day weekend.

5/13/07 - The GSC and the ASC Freedom tangle at Grist Mill Park with offense aplenty this match.  But strong play for most of the match isn't rewarded when a couple of untimely Spirit mistakes cost them dearly, allowing the Freedom to slip by with a 4-3 victory over our girls
.

5/12/07 - In the duel for first place, the Spirit hit the road to Loudoun County to play the division leading Sterling Avalanche, but the momentum of the girls' previous victories can't win the day.  With injuries plaguing the Spirit through the match, our girls drop their first match of the season, 0-4.

5/6/07 - The Spirit return home to take on the second place McLean Bravehearts on an absolutely beautiful day to play soccer.  In what could be mistaken for a replay of the past two matches, both clubs can't cash in on chances to score.  But when a penalty kick finds the back of the net, it stands as the lone goal in the match.  After the Spirit made good on that one important opportunity, critical keeper saves and consistent defense stifled the opposition and preserved the clean sheet (now at 210 minutes+ running this season) as the Spirit ride their third victory of the season to second place in the division, 1-0.

4/29/07 - The Spirit hit the road to Front Royal for their first away match against the WIN United 93.  Both teams create good opportunities to score throughout the match with each team playing their respective brand of offense, but it is the Spirit who capitalize, finally putting one in the back of the net after a rentless offensive attack.  On the other end of the pitch, excellent keeper work and defense stop all of the opposition's send-and-run breakaways, giving the Spirit their second victory of the season, 1-0.

4/22/07 - The Spirit open up their regular season at home against the VISTA Cobras.   Scoring on a well struck, perfectly placed second half free kick from 20 yards out to post the only goal for the match, our girls put their first Division 1 match this spring in the win column, 1-0.

4/15/07 - Mother Nature decides soccer should be played later in the spring!  Our match with the Avalanche gets washed out in a big way, along with every soccer league in the Capitol area.  Look for this match to be replayed May 12th at 11:00 a.m.

Tournament - 3/24 and 3/25 - Prince William Icebreaker (Preseason) - The Spirit complete the preseason with four strong performances in one of the major March tournaments in Northern Virginia, outscoring the opposition 14 to 1, while recording two clean sheets, in the three games leading up to the finals.  The Championship match featured strong offense and defense from our girls, but regulation and OT ended with a 2-2 draw against the McLean Liberty.  The defining difference came in tie-break penalty kicks, where the Spirit made 3 of their first 4, while superior GSC keeper work kept the opposition scoreless.  With the strong momentum from this tournament win, the Spirit move to the regular season in April.
