2008 Spring Match and Tournaments Results & Headlines

June 5th, 2008 - Ending the season strong, our girls parlay their division-leading defense to a first place finish by blanking the Sterling Avalanche 1-0.  A great free kick goal, just like the one that started the season at the March PWSI tourney, made the difference in this evenly matched duel.  Look for the Spirit in Division 4 of WAGS U-15 next season!  WAY TO GO, GIRLS!

June 1st, 2008 - The Spirit travel to the home turf of the PWSI Courage at Tyrell Park in Woodbridge.  Seeking redemption for their championship game loss against the Spirit in March earlier this year, the Courage edge out our girls in a hard-fought battle for first place in the division, 2-1.

May 31st - For a record sixth time, rain has its way with our schedule, literally blowing away our scheduled match in a drenching downpour.  Look for this one to be rescheduled during the week of June 1st as we close the season with a big match against the strong Sterling Avalanche.  Perhaps there is a silver lining in those rainclouds after all?

May 25th & 26th, 2008 - The weather turns brighter for the Spirit as the 33rd annual Virginian Tournament is played under sunny, warm spring skies on the new artifical turf fields of Howison Park and features another battle between the two neighboring Commonwealths of Virginia and Pennsylvania.  Once again, the Spirit show well in this tournament, passing well and holding the opposition in our flight to only one goal in pool play for the tourney, but that 0-1 loss against PA's Rage Soccer Club rained on the Spirit's hopes for a title defense of last year's tourney win.  The GSC finish a respectable second place for the tourney and looks toward next weekend's season ending WAGS matches to hold onto their grip of first place in their division.

May 18th, 2008 - Daring a record sixth rainout this season, our girls calmly went about their game to blank the Winchester United 2-0 on two nice strikes, extending their unbeaten streak to 7 matches and putting the Spirit in first place in our division of WAGS!  A continued big congratulations to our defense and goal-keepers who have continued to have the lowest "goals against" total (6) for the 10 division teams that have played at least eight of the season's ten matches (which is all but one team) for the last three weeks!

May 17th, 2008 - Allowing a first half goal, in spite of dominating the pitch, didn't phase our girls, who went about methodically pounding the Cugini Soccer Club's defense until it yielded two second half goals, en route to a second come-from-behind 2-1 victory for the Spirit in as many matches and another move up the standings of our division.

May 11th, 2008 - Slugging (slogging?) it out in a cold rain on Mother's Day, the tenacity and physical condition of our girls overcomes a one (PK) goal deficit at the half, scoring two goals in the second half after near-continual domination of the pitch.  A thoroughly soaked Spirit defeats the Herndon Magic 2-1 to extend their undefeated streak to five matches and climb up the division ladder, moving to within one point of 3rd place.

May 10th, 2008 - Five rainouts in one season?  You've got to be kidding me.  Look for this one against Cugini Soccer Club's Calciomania to be rescheduled due to rain as well!

May 4th, 2008 - In a hard fought back-and-forth battle with the second place Great Falls Extreme, the Spirit extend their clean sheet to two matches, but can't cash in on some great opportunties, leaving the match a draw at 0-0.  The tie keeps the Spirit in fourth place in the division going into their next doubleheader during the upcoming Mother's Day weekend.

May 3rd, 2008 - The Spirit travels to Vienna and maintain their winning ways, putting up a strong showing against the VYS Smash and posting another clean sheet victory for the defense, taking this one 2-0 and moving into fourth place in the eleven team division!

April 27th, 2008 - Apparently we have done something to offend Mother Nature, as our match against the Sterling Avalanche is rained out!  Get ready for the doubleheader weekends of May!

April 26th, 2008 - Proving they can "get up" for an early morning 'travel' match, the Spirit venture out of state to the Maryland Soccerplex to tangle with the DSC Extreme, controlling the pitch and coming out on the winning end of a 4-1 decision.

April 20th, 2008 - Mother Nature takes it to us for a third time!  Rain cancels our second home match at Grist Mill!

April 19th, 2008 - In the "home" opener (at Lorton Rec), the Spirit maintained their dominating play, shutting out the DCST Impact 1-0 to even their season record at 1 win, 1 loss.

April 13th, 2008 - In the season opener, our girls travel to Clifton and put up the first two goals of the match on some well constructed runs and were strong through the majority of the match, faultering just enough in the latter part of the second half to allow an opportunistic Vista Fury team to eek out a 3-2 victory against the Spirit in stoppage time.

April 6, 2008 - Mother Nature also decides our first regular season match is not happening either!  Rain washes out the season home opener!

March 29th & 30th, 2008 - PWSI Icebreaker - In dramatic fashion, the Spirit capture their first championship crown of 2008 by playing solid defense, posting four clean sheets through the tourney and completing their defense of the tourney championship they first earned in 2007 by defeating the host PWSI Courage 93 White by a score of 1-0!  Congratulations Spirit!  For results of the matches, scroll down to the "2008 Tournament Schedule".

March 8, 2008 - Mother Nature decides our first tournament of the season is not happening!  Rain washes out the entire Chesterfield Icebreaker!
