BASIC JOB QUALIFICATIONS

• Anywhere from 5 to 20+ years local experience performing basic design and/or drafting functions of residential and commercial land development projects in the Northern Virginia area including street design per VDOT and Fairfax County PFM standards
• Professional Engineer's license a plus, but not required for engineering positions
• Engineers & Surveyors Institute (ESI) Designated Plans Examiner certificate a plus, but not required - any ESI course work also a plus
• AutoCADD experience a plus (current versions - Land Development package) - applicable to all positions

JOB DESCRIPTION

The position can be tailored to the successful candidate's experience level, but at a minimum expect to be able to, or learn to:

Design Engineer or Project Manager Positions

• Be responsible for managing a client relationship and contract - understand the basics of invoicing your client and seeing that collections are made.
• Respond to client requests and questions.  Clientele would be tailored to engineer's ability level.  We have all types of clients from simple to complex.
• Be in direct contact with Fairfax County review agency staff and maintain a good relationship with staff while achieving positive results for your client.
• Write technical letters and waiver requests with proficiency and persuasive and informative style.
• Be able to work with both hand and CADD drafters to see that designs and plans are compiled properly and in a quality fashion.

• Be responsible for setting up projects bases, draft civil site and subdivision plans and profiles
• Work directly with experienced engineers to expand and introduce the selected candidate to design related functions
• Learn infill residential lot grading plan preparation requirements to facilitate plan preparation and completion
• Perform County and jurisdictional research functions and basic plan checking functions

• Telecommute and/or work with staff that telecommutes.  Though we have a central office, we have a very flexible work schedule and the discipline and ability to work independently at home or other locations, under the right conditions, is considered a plus for these positions.  The majority of our staff telecommutes up to two days of the week.  Please note that it is not, however, a requirement to telecommute yourself - just that you be able to work with telecommuters.  Doing it yourself is optional.
• Reimbursement for expenses for home office use is available.
• Use the Internet to transmit information to clients, consultants and review agencies in electronic format as well as liberally use e-mail as communication.

WHO YOU WOULD BE WORKING WITH (CURRENT STAFF)

A little about the people you'd be working with:

• Three full-time and one part-time civil engineers (two of which are licensed P.E.'s)
• One full-time administrative office manager
• One full-time engineering technician/researcher and plans expediter
• One full-time CADD drafter
• One civil ink-on-mylar drafter and graphic artistt
• One part-time hydraulics/water quality engineer

We do not perform surveying in-house nor do we intend to in the future.  Our surveying work has been subcontracted for the past 18 years to locally reputable, reliable firms.
 

We believe that the "infill" market for small, specialized clientele such as redevelopment, small projects and community association maintenance and infrastructure consulting will continue to remain extremely strong, largely irrespective of the national economic cycle.  As a firm entering our 20th year, we are committed to being one of the top specialized custom site civil engineering firms in the County for that work.  And to do so successfully and profitably, it is essential to have an experienced and motivated staff.  Thus we seek candidates who wants a challenge and a more flexible and independent working environment that want to constantly challenge themselves to do better, both for themselves as well as the firm and their clients.
